Just because you’re a senior doesn’t mean you can’t have beautiful, healthy skin! In fact, now is the perfect time to develop a solid skin care routine that will see you through your retirement years and beyond. Here's a quick overview of what your morning and nighttime skin care routines should look like as a senior.
In the Morning
After you wake up and wash your face with warm water, it's time to apply some moisturizer. Be sure to use a light lotion or cream that won't clog your pores; we recommend an oil-free, hypoallergenic moisturizer for seniors. Once your skin is nice and hydrated, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Don't forget to put sunscreen on your neck and hands, too!
After your sunscreen has had a chance to sink in (give it about 20 minutes), it's time to apply some makeup, if you so desire. Use light coverage foundation or BB cream and set it with some loose powder. Then, add a little color to your cheeks with some blush, and finish things off with some mascara and lip balm. And that's it—you're ready to take on the day!
At Night
Once you've removed your makeup (use a gentle makeup remover or cleanser), it's time to exfoliate. You only need to exfoliate once or twice a week, but it's important to do it in order to remove dead skin cells that can make your skin look dull. We recommend using a gentle exfoliating scrub that contains jojoba beads or microdermabrasion crystals. Focus on problem areas like your nose and chin but be careful not to scrub too hard—you don't want to irritate your skin!
After you've exfoliated, it's time to cleanse again. This step is important in order to remove any residual dirt, makeup, or exfoliating particles that might be leftover on your skin. Use warm water and massage your face in circular motions for about 60 seconds; then rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel. Next, apply toner with a cotton ball all over your face; this will help close up your pores and give your skin an extra shot of hydration. Finally, apply an eye cream or gel around your eyes (be sure to dab instead of rubbing!) and finish things off with a light layer of night cream all over your face.
Achieving beautiful, healthy skin as a senior is achievable with the right skin care routine! By cleansing twice daily, exfoliating once or twice per week, and applying sunscreen and moisturizer religiously, you can enjoy many years of worry-free retirement—with gorgeous skin to match!
